New Alfa Romeo GT Review
The Alfa Romeo GT is based on the platform of the 156 but this Coupe really does show the best in Alfa Romeo styling. Designed by the Bertone styling centre, the GT looks aggressive even when it's parked on the drive. Drawing on their history and tradition - this is the company that brought us the Giulietta and the Alfetta - the GT has all the Italian flair and styling that we have come to expect from Alfa.
The deep V - grille, exquisitely designed light clusters, and front air vents give a face to the GT that almost appears to be snarling drive me. Follow the sweeping lines round to the rear and the first thing you notice are the wrap round tail lights built into the bodywork, move round further and the back drops away from the raked rear screen down to the large body coloured bumpers.
There are three different engines in the Alfa Romeo GT range, two petrol's and a diesel, the entry level petrol engine is the 2.0 JTS developing 165 bhp through a five speed manual gearbox giving this GT model a top speed of 134 mph. The other petrol unit in the GT range is the 3.2 V6, the 240 brake horse power for this unit is transferred to the road by a six speed manual transmission giving a top speed of 151 mph. Finally the 1.9 JTDm 16v diesel unit, developing 150 bhp through a six speed manual gearbox the diesel has a top speed of 130 mph.
Standard equipment on both the Alfa Romeo GT 1.9 JTDm 16v and GT 2.0 JTS models includes anti lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), fire prevention system, driver and passenger front side and window airbags, Alfa code immobiliser and alarm system, remote control central locking, power assisted steering, electric front windows, dual zone automatic climate control, cruise control, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, remote audio controls on steering wheel, multifunction display and trip computer, front armrest with storage box, ski hatch to boot, comfort pack, Alfatex cloth upholstery, vehicle dynamic control and a 60/40 split folding rear seat.
The GT 3.2 V6 has the same standard equipment as the other two models but also has a double chromed exhaust, sports suspension, sports steering, 17" spoked alloy wheels with 225/40 R18 tyres, a stereo radio CD player with MP3 reader, bose sound system and leather upholstery all in addition or replacement to the other models.
All in all, the Alfa Romeo GT offers sporty Coupe styling with the space and comfort of a saloon, delivering superb performance, or economy, depending on your choice of engine there is sure to be a GT to suit your driving needs.
