A Brief History of Mercedes Car
The name of Mercedes-Benz can be traced back to 1926 when the Daimler-Benz company was created by two companies, who, up until that time, had been fierce competitors for many years. Those two companies were Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG), living only sixty miles apart, the founders of these two companies independently "invented" what would become the motorcar that we use today. Although their ideas were similar in some respects it would be Karl Benz who in January of 1886 patented what we regard as the first motorcar, a three wheeler powered by an internal combustion engine with a custom designed chassis. This link that runs back through Mercedes' history is the reason why Mercedes is regarded as the oldest car manufacturer in the world today.
The two companies, Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) both felt the impact of the depression following the end of the First World War and in 1924 signed an "Agreement of Mutual Interest", this allowed both companies to manufacture and market their own vehicles under their own names and remained valid until the year 2000. The signing of this agreement led to the two companies merging two years later and the Mercedes-Benz car brand was born.
It would take a further 11 years before the famous three-pointed star became the Mercedes logo that we are so familiar with today. This emblem represents the three fundamental areas of transport for the company, on land, sea and in the sky.
1998 saw Mercedes merging with the often financially troubled North American Chrysler Corporation, a so-called "merger of equals" has however turned sour and 2007 saw Mercedes offloading the Chrysler brand due to the losses being made by the American manufacturer.
The Mercedes brand is a world leader in technological advances in the automotive industry and this is could not be any clearer when looking at the Mercedes S Class, as Jeremy Clarkson said on an episode of Top Gear, "It's more than just a car, it's a glimpse into the future, it's a showcase of everything that can be done and everything that everyone else will be doing very soon."
The latest Mercedes car models include the G Class, S Class and V Class - meaning they have all car model types covered.
